Its BIG its Black and its ugly, but I like it

It happens to be my new car! I have for a long time been wondering what to go out and buy as my next car and finally decided and bought one. The process was a little involved and you’ll have suffer the story ;-)

I currently own a Matiz (Daewoo). A great car really, how I wish there were was still service and spares available for it. I would not have bought another car in a hurry. But it was not to be and even though for the last 3 years I have been hearing of a re-launch of the Matiz, it seems to be nowhere in sight. Its just permanantly “real soon now”. Besides, the rumours also state that the new Matiz will be different so parts will not interchange. It will be sad to see the Matiz go, cause its a great car. The kind of price I am being offered for it really saddens me even more. At that price, I feel I might just keep it.

So left with little choice, I decided to start looking at some of the new cars on the roads today. On the one hand the choices are tremendous, but when you really get down to it, there are just a handful really.

My first toss-up was a sedan or an SUV. There are some very cool sedans available out there, but for some reason I was just not in the mood for one. That knocked the whole segment of sedans and sort of affordable cars off the list. One day after I buy, Hyundai launched yet another nice car the Verna. But no sedan for me.

An SUV in a city like Delhi is very impractical. Having said that, if you can’t drive an SUV on the Delhi roads then no other city in the country offers better roads! Now the hunt for an afforable SUV. The Tucson from Hyundai is what I really liked but its very expensive, as is the Honda CRV and the Suzuki Grand Vitara, so I never even bothered looking at them. Of course the range above those is also nice but…so that knocks off the Ford Endeavour, the Pajeros, Land Cruisers etc etc.

What does it really leave then? Just two that came up, the Innova and the Scorpio. Somebody did mention a Tata Safari but for some reason it never came up for scrutiny. The Innova is very nice indeed, in fact what surprised me is the number of people who recommended it to me. Thats what eventually convinced me to go and test drive it. Good technology, great engineering, excellent finish but…

So my new car is the Scorpio! I’m off for a drive.
