Get (Un)Stuffed

I have been a Palm user for a long time now, I started with a Palm Pilot III, moved on to a m505 and currently own a Tungsten T5. I have been tempted to look at the converged Treo series of devices but as yet have not bitten the bullet on that. One BIG problem I do have with Palm is the way they handle updates and software releases. Most of the time, the only format they release in is a compressed (zipped) EXE file. They have always had to deal with Mac users and for them they do provide a SIT (StuffIT) file with the PRC (Palm executable) inside.

Us poor and unfortunate Linux users are just completely ignored!

Now if I could only uncompress a SIT file on my Linux desktop, I’d be in business. I have searched the net before for this and not had much success. A few days back I found what I have been looking for. StuffIT now has a Linux version. The good thing is that the trial version will let you create SIT files (which is not my intention at all) but more importantly, it has the unstuffit bundled for free!

Armed with unstuffit, I can download updates from Palm, unstuff them and directly apply them to my Tungsten. Not sure if there are any others who have been in the same predicament, but I certainly found it invaluable.

Before I forget, you can download it from here http://www.stuffit.com/.

Cheers…Kishore
