WordPress 2.1
A couple of days ago (Jan 23rd) WordPress came out with a major revision (2.1). The new version is named “Ella” (WordPress has a history of naming all versions after “Jazz” Artists). So whats new in this version, well first of all there are tons of bug fixes, the official site states over 500 bug fixes, despite that I can tell you the older version wasn’t really broken, before you get that impression! Nice changes in the admin interface, more AJAX stuff etc, etc filled with goodies which will take me some time to explore. Now I am no coder so I don’t know what all has actually changed on the inside but the reports are all pretty good. I came across this article just before doing the upgrade on my own site and a few other sites I help out with:

Overall, the upgrade was smooth, first of all the upgrades tend to force you into doing a backup, so I now have a backup! But some things did break for me, and as I went into the support forums and checked it seems they did break for others too! One of the biggest was the merging of the “categories” and “links”, I guess going forward this will be good but for now it seems to have a lot of themes and sites coping with the changes to fix it. Basically, the function changed in name and is now used in a slightly different way. I don’t have too many links on my page but the one that I do have is no longer aligned with the rest. I am going to leave it like that for now and wait for changes to happen in the theme collections before I finally fix it. But another issue this caused is my favourite offline tool Performancing also no longer recognises my categories for posts. So when I finish writing a post, I will have to log in to move it into the correct category. Maybe there will be an update soon.
I am happy I upgraded and will keep a close watch on this. If you are using WordPress anywhere, I’d say go for it but only and only if all your themes and plugins are supported!

Kartik, I never lost a byte either but I did have issues with themes and plugins. BTW, you have a very kewl CLI theme on your site!

Hi! Saurabh, thanks for your comments.
Although, I love Wordpress, maybe for the requirement you have you should look at some of the other systems out there. Joomla may be a better choice in running what sounds like a portal to me.
